The two pieces titled 'A' and 'B', are both in C major(? C something...), never performed that I am aware of, and recorded only by completists. The second piece "B" (6:50) is more of what we expect from Prokofiev, and really people, get out and play these gems. Check out the wonderful episode at 9:03. Download the score at imslp.org According to the biographer Harlow Robinson, Prokofiev wrote the pieces "very slowly, because I don't want to toss them off without reflection," and viewed them as an opportunity to "penetrate deeply into music and into myself." Nestyev did not have many nice things to say: "An acquaintance with the theories of Kant was later reflected in the title of the piano pieces Things in Themselves (op 45, 1928)." "In the summer of 1928, which he spent in a village near Paris, Prokofiev composed two small piano pieces which he called Things in Themselves (Op 45). This was his first piano music since the Fifth Sonata, written five years earlier. The coldly intellectual piano style which he had developed in Paris was far removed from the healthy, virile style which had delighted listeners in his youthful works." "Rhythmic resilience and clarity of thought had given way to dull, rational speculation, and rich tone color had faded into colorless outlines." "It is not difficult to guess the reasons for this radical metamorphosis. First of all, the latest bourgeois art, with its emphasis on rationalism and a severe "purist" approach, could not but have affected his work. Most important, however, was the sad fact that Prokofiev had lost touch with the living sources of his art. Lacking the external stimuli favorable to the creation of music reflecting some aspect of reality, he retired into a narrow world of pure abstractions." "But what he had conceived as an expression of philosophical principles, as a music of pure contemplation, most listeners regarded as an artificial combining of sounds."
